From Surprise to Support: A Psychologist's Guide

Coming out can be one of the most vulnerable moments in a person's life, and how you respond matters.

From Surprise to Support

This Pride Month, Online Psychologists Australia (OPA) has launched From Surprise to Support, a free guide designed to help parents, teachers and loved ones respond with empathy and support when someone shares their LGBTI+ identity.

Why it matters

LGBTI+ Australians are more than twice as likely to experience a mental health disorder, not because of their identity but because of stigma, rejection and lack of support. But affirming support from those closest to them can make a lifechanging difference.

What you will learn:

  • What to say (and what not to say)

  • How to be a "safe person"

  • Steps to support someone in the days and weeks after they come out

Need to talk to someone?

Whether you're navigating your own identity or supporting someone else, speaking with a psychologist can help.

Book an appointment today with one of our trusted, inclusive psychologists.
