What common types of anger issues are treated in anger management therapy?

Anger manifests uniquely in each person, irrespective of age, gender, or background. Recognising the common types of anger can significantly assist in effective anger management therapy. The types of anger commonly treated include:

  • Volatile Anger: Sudden anger outbursts, often escalating rapidly.

  • Verbal Anger: Using words aggressively, potentially damaging relationships through emotional abuse.

  • Self-abusive Anger: Negative internal dialogue leading to self-destructive behaviours.

  • Retaliatory Anger: Reactive anger triggered by perceived threats or injustices.

  • Passive-aggressive Anger: Indirect anger expressions, such as sarcasm or procrastination, avoiding direct confrontation.

  • Overwhelmed Anger: Anger arising from feeling excessively stressed or burdened.

  • Judgemental Anger: Anger resulting from perceived moral superiority or the shortcomings of others.

  • Chronic Anger: Persistent resentment or irritation impacting physical and emotional health.

  • Behavioural Anger: Anger expressed through physical actions, potentially leading to aggressive or violent behaviour.

  • Assertive Anger: Constructive anger used positively as a motivator for change without causing harm.

Most individuals experience multiple anger types to varying degrees. Our psychologists will help you identify and manage these emotions effectively, teaching practical techniques to prevent escalation and promote emotional resilience.
